WHEN SHOULD I TAKE DUKORAL® ?

*for children between 2 and 6 taking DUKORAL®  to prevent cholera, start at least 3 weeks before your departure

DUKORAL® must be started at least 2 weeks before you leave, unless this is a booster dose. Remember to leave enough time before your next trip.

WHERE CAN I GET DUKORAL® ?

What is it?

An infectious disease of the intestines that is acquired by consuming water or food that has been contaminated by the bacteria Vibrio cholerae.
It is estimated that around 1.3 to 4 million cholera cases occur every year, with 21,000 to 143,000 deaths worldwide.

What are the symptoms?

Cholera is often mild or without symptoms, but can be severe. Severe symptoms include:
  • Watery diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Leg cramps
  • Dehydration
  • Death
~1 in 10 people infected with cholera will develop severe symptoms

Will I be at risk?

Cholera occurs most commonly in regions of the world where there is inadequate sanitation, poor hygiene, overcrowding and a lack of safe water and food.
Many developing countries are facing an epidemic or risk of a cholera outbreak.
Cholera outbreaks have occurred in a number of regions, including Asia, Africa and the Americas.

How can I protect myself?

You can help protect yourself with DUKORAL®. Before you travel to an at-risk area, ask your healthcare professional if DUKORAL® is right for you.
You should also:
1. Take care with your food and water choices

Boil, peel or cook your own food when possible

Avoid uncooked foods in restaurants, especially shellfish or salads

Drink bottled or boiled water

2. Wash your hands thoroughly before eating and after using toilet facilities
